How does the laser work?

In laser skin resurfacing a laser is used to remove areas of damaged or wrinkled skin, layer by layer. The procedure is most commonly used to minimize the appearance of fine lines, especially around the mouth and the eyes. Often, the procedure is done in conjunction with another cosmetic procedure, such as eyelid surgery (Blepharoplasty)

The laser also stimulates collagen and elastin contraction along with new collagen formation - which only adds to the more youthful looking you that will emerge after treatment. Although most patients are women, an increasing number of men are also choosing laser resurfacing. Laser treatment is applicable to anyone who wishes to gain a little in the race of life.

What are the types of lasers available?

Presently, there are two types of lasers. The Erbium laser will remove superficial wrinkles and improve moderate and severe

wrinkles with a healing time of several days.

For the more established wrinkles, a carbon dioxide super-pulsed laser is used. This process requires one week healing time and leaves a residual redness that disappears after several weeks. Often, we combine both lasers as the clinical situation permits so that redness lasts only a couple of weeks and wrinkles are treated most effectively.

What are my alternatives to laser treatment?

For years, chemical peels and dermabrasion have been the mainstays of therapy for wrinkles and sun-damaged skin. But the results are hard to predict. The newer alpha-hydroxy acids and retinoids are just too mild to improve wrinkled or sun-damaged skin to any degree.

How effective is laser wrinkle removal?

In a recent study, we found that wrinkles can be divided into three groups. Mild superficial wrinkles can disappear completely. Moderate wrinkles tend to become superficial wrinkles. Deep wrinkles diminish into moderate wrinkles.

We can improve wrinkles around the eyes, crepe paper type changes seen on the cheeks, saggy upper and lower eyelids, and sun damage.

What are the side effects?

Postoperatively, there is weeping and swelling which usually improves within a few days. After this, your skin may appear pink for a few weeks, however, special cover-up make-up may be applied after one week, allowing you to return to work fresh and rejuvenated.
